SolarScapes

(1999-2000)

Liberty Science Center (LSC) and GPU Energy are pleased to announce the winners of the 1999 SolarScapes competition: Firefly Light Sculpture submitted by The Mark Yurkiw Group; and Solpherica , submitted by Ameila Amon and Wendy Brawer.

This competition represented a rare opportunity for the art and design communities to submit proposals for the commission of two, large-scale, solar art projects for Liberty Science Center, in Liberty State Park, New Jersey. One project will be located inside the 150-foot tower of the building, and the other will be installed on an outdoor deck, each overlooking Liberty State Park and the Hudson River. The intent of both projects is to inform and inspire LSC’s visitors about the potential of solar energy. A variety of educational initiatives will also be developed to enhance public awareness regarding the use of renewable energy sources.

The SolarScapes competition and forthcoming educational initiatives were made possible through the visionary sponsorship and guidance of GPU Energy, Liberty Science Center, and ASCI (Art & Science Collaborations, Inc.) an international non-profit arts organization based in New York City, acting as project facilitator.
