NYC is a 24/7 kinetic world! Experiencing George Rhoads’ audio-kinetic sculpture, 42nd Street Ballroom (in the Port Authority Bus Station), convinced me of the power of movement and change in art. This led to designing kinetic art exhibition projects, and a large-scale aquatic sculpture with a solar-powered lighting system.

Water-Strider
(1994-1996) 8′ x 4′ x 2.5′
Cynthia’s kinetic, aquatic sculpture had a fiber-optic lighting system powered by the sun; test in Key Biscayne Harbor, Florida. Objective: use captivating artworks to share on-shore info about the benefits of using electricity from renewable energy sources.
Staten Island Ferry Terminal Project
(1988)
Was a proposal to bring the breathtaking beauty of New York’s waterworld into the dismal “holding-tank” waiting room (on the Staten Island side) via solar fed fiber-optic lighting effects on high, horizontal display panels. It didn’t happen… but ASCI.ORG did!
